Greater Moncton walking group- January was a great month at the Mapleton Park Trail. There were some icy mornings, but walkers judged the conditions and decided whether or not to pursue. For the month of February, we move to the Centennial Park Trail. We meet at the parking lot on St. George St. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30. As long as school isn't closed due to weather, we walk- sunshine, rain, or snow, nothing stops us!

1 February: The regular monthly meeting of the Greater Moncton Prostate Cancer Support Group will be held on Wednesday, February 1, at 7 pm at the YMCA, 30 War Veterans Avenue, Moncton. Special speaker: John Staples, well known Moncton pharmacist. Topic: The role played by supplements and vitamins in cancer treatment. This meeting is open to prostate cancer survivors, their spouses/partners, and anyone interested in learning more about this disease. Everyone welcome!

Message from Deborah Carr- The long, cold days of winter present an excellent opportunity for both hibernating and beginning a writing project. But, if you're like me, it's also a time when I feel most in need of a little companionship, along with the motivation and energy that working with others can bring.
So, I've scheduled a series of writing workshops to take place at the Riverview Public Library on Saturdays during the month of February. February is all about LOVE, and that includes loving YOU. Give yourself the boost and encouragement you need to start. (PS - you might want to read my views on being a writer.)
WRITING LIFE STORIES This non-fiction workshop series (suitable for all levels, including beginners) will cover the writing process from information gathering through drafts, revisions and polishing. Weekly topics are Writer 's Field Notes, The Nature of Story, The Art of Revision, The Writer’s Editing Toolbox. Each session can be taken individually, however those who attend the whole series will gain the benefit of working with a single piece of writing from start to finish.
If you are straddling the fence, a free introductory session will be held at the library on Thursday, February 2nd from 6PM-8PM. Bring along a pen and notebook to try a few easy exercises.
I hope you can join me for individual sessions or for all four in the series. I'm offering a discount for those who register for the series and and pay before January 28th.

2 – 4 February: An evening of entertainment to look forward to in February as Hubcity Theatre presents a timeless classic. Moncton's Hubcity Theatre brings you "The Three Musketeers" by Ken Ludwig (based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas). 3 February: Trojan Basketball Wall of Fame Ceremonies
Several years ago, Todd MacKillop initiated an annual ceremony honouring former Trojan Basketball players, coaches and supporters. With the help of Don Morton, Don Grant and past yearbooks, several former Trojans have been honoured at a public ceremony and with a beautiful mounted basketball court outside the gym. This years' ceremony will be this Friday evening (Feb.3) at 7pm. We would love to see as many of you attend as possible. This year, the inductees are: Scott Fowler(class of '72); Dr.Jeff Mowatt(class of"89); Roberto Didonato(class of '94); 1986 team-some of the notables were Scott and Shane Steeves, Todd MacKillop, Tony Matthews, Dan Campbell, Dennis Lirette, Rob Kelly, Paul Doucet, Pat Laroque and others.

4 February: February is Suicide Prevention Month
The Albert-Westmorland Suicide Prevention Committee is pleased to announce a community event taking place on Saturday February 4th, 2012. Community members are asked to join us in a walk at the Rotary Park in Dieppe, a walk to commemorate those who have died by suicide, support those who grieve, reduce stigma and raise awareness toward the prevention of suicide. Registration will be at 10:30 and the walk will begin at 11:00.There will be prizes to be drawn. The Dieppe Winter Carnival will get underway that afternoon, so this is a great opportunity to support a worthy cause and to enjoy family time as well.

Le Comité communautaire de prévention du suicide de la région d’Albert-Westmorland est heureux d’annoncer qu’un événement communautaire aura lieu le samedi 4 février 2012. Les membres de la collectivité de la région sont priés de nous joindre au parc Rotary de Dieppe pour une marche. Une marche afin de se souvenir de ceux qui se sont suicidés, pour réconforter ceux qui ont été touchés par ces pertes tragiques et afin de sensibiliser les gens à la prévention du suicide. Vous pourrez vous enregistrer à 10h30 et la marche débute à 11h00. Des prix de participation seront tirés. Le Carnaval d'Amitié de Dieppe débute en après midi, alors vous aurez l'occasion d'en profiter, ainsi que de passer du temps précieux en famille et avec des amis. Saturday, February 4, Radio Canada will be filming the Mass at Eglise Saint-Anselme, Dieppe, featuring the Neil-Michaud Men's choir. Gregorian Chant, and works from the renaissance to the modern era. The Mass is at 4 p.m. but arrive early if possible. The Mass will be aired the next day, February 5, on Radio Canada's Jour du Seigneur t.v. program, 11 a.m. in the morning. Holly Waltz is pianist and organist for the Neil-Michaud choir!

5 February: Symphony New Brunswick presents Metamorphosis, the first of a series of chamber music concerts, featuring Stephen Runge, Piano, Patrick Bolduc, Bassoon, Christie Goodwin, Oboe, and David Parker, French Horn, on Sunday, February 5th, at 2 pm, at Mount Royal United Church, 106 Mount Royal Blvd., Moncton. On the programme, works by R. Strauss, B. Britten, C. Saint-Saëns, C. Reinecke, and F. Poulenc. Tickets available at the door. Adults $25, Seniors $20, and Students $10. 10 February: Come enjoy the inaugural concert of Folk & Baroque, a series featuring fiddler/violinist Katherine Moller and friends. An evening of Celtic/Old Tyme fiddle and song with guest Tom Richards will take place on Friday, February 10th. This series of intimate acoustic concert will be held in room 211 of the Charlotte St. Arts Centre (732 Charlotte St., Fredericton) and will begin at 7:30pm. 18 February: On Saturday, February 18, join Nature Moncton for our annual Bird Feeder Tour. We’ll be visiting bird feeding areas at several member’s yards to enjoy winter bird species, share ideas for feeder types, seed preferences, favorable habitat recommendations and other successful techniques folks have used to attract birds and wildlife to their yards. Bring a sandwich and enjoy lunch at the Renton’s for one of Jean’s famous soup creations. Our final stop will be at the Poirier’s where Pat Poirier will treat us with a “surprise pot” for the après feeder tour get together. Please bring a dessert to share. Carpool at the north-west corner of the Moncton Coliseum, 337 Killam Dr. 8:30am. Bring any necessary gear for the season, winter wear and friends! 18 February: Are you a graduate or former teacher at Harrison Trimble High School in Moncton? As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, there will be a special Teachers’ Variety Show featuring present, past and retired teachers of HTHS. Doors will open at HTHS at 6:30 on February 18. This is a 19+ event which means it will be a licensed so Molson Products and a few coolers etc will be served! Tickets are just $10 each and are available from the school during the day or at Jean Coutu/Steeves Drugs, 1789 Mountain Road in the evening. Many favourites from the past will be on the ticket.

GREATER MONCTON INFORMAL WALKING GROUP

This group started in October 2005.

Who? Everyone is welcome.
When? Every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
We only cancel if schools are closed because of weather.
Where? We plan to choose various trails in the Greater Moncton area
Why? Walking in the fresh air is healthy and pleasant.
To walk with a few others is a bonus.
Participants walk at their own rate and at their own risk.
Usually our walks last about 45 - 60 minutes, but that's flexible.
We often go to the nearest Tim's for coffee afterwards, an added incentive!
